Man hit and killed by firework at vigil for victims of deadly car crash

A man who was injured after being struck by a firework while attending a vigil has died.

Police were called to the scene of the incident on Huddersfield Road, Oldham, on November 19.

A 52-year-old man, who has not been named, was then taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Now in an update the force has said the man sadly passed away in hospital last Friday, Manchester Evening News report.

Police said he was "injured by a firework" in an "isolated incident" near the Delph and Dobcross Cricket Club.

They confirmed their investigation is ongoing - but police are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

Police still request that anyone with information comes forward after confirming the man had lost his life.

In a statement, a force spokesperson said: "Police were called shortly before 9pm on Friday 19 November 2021 to a report of a man injured by a firework during a vigil on Huddersfield Road, at the junction with Sandbed Lane, near to Delph and Dobcross Cricket Club.

"Emergency services attended and a 52-year-old male was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"However, he sadly passed away in hospital on Friday 26 November.

"Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this time and the investigation is ongoing."

The vigil was being held for tragic pair Reiss Jarvis and Karl Young, who died when a vehicle they were travelling in came off a carriageway and hit a tree on November 10.

Friends and family were meeting to remember Reiss, aged 21, and Karl, 34, who both worked in Oldham town centre.

Reiss had previously worked as an actor and starred in a drama broadcast on the BBC.

People had gathered to remember the pair, who lost their lives earlier that month.

A Mazda 3 was driving along the road before it came off the carriageway and hit a tree, police said.

It then came to a stop in a field on the side of the road.

Fire crews were at the scene for around five hours, a spokesperson said.
