Man held without bail in fatal shooting of woman in March

April 09--A 32-year-old man was ordered held without bail after being charged with fatally shooting a woman in March, prosecutors said Friday.

Emmanuel Raya, of the 7500 block of West Belmont Avenue, was ordered held by Judge Peggy Chiampas at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.

Raya is charged with first-degree murder in the fatal shooting of Jeanette Laureano, 24, of the 2200 block of North Nagle Avenue, on March 18.

In court Friday, prosecutors said Laureano was driving herself and her cousin into Chicago from the suburbs. The two were members of the the Spanish Cobra street gang, prosecutors said.

After they arrived in Chicago they picked up friends and drove around. At 5:52 p.m. they pulled up to a corner store in the 2700 block of North Kilbourn Avenue, according to prosecutors.

Laureano parked and stayed in the van while her cousin and others got out and walked toward the store. As they were walking, a car drove by and someone inside yelled out gang slogans, prosecutors said.

Laureano's cousin yelled gang slogans and made gang signs to the people in the car in response, prosecutors said.

A short time later, as Laureano's cousin and the others stood on the sidewalk by the door of the store, Raya, who is a Maniac Latin Disciple gang member, got out of a black Mercedes holding a gun, according to prosecutors.

He walked up to where Laureano was parked and fired several rounds at close range at Laureano, who was seated in the front seat of the van, prosecutors said.

After the shooting, Raya ran back to the Mercedes, got into the back seat and then the car drove off, prosecutors said. Laureano was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital at 6:36 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

A witness was able to jot down a portion of the license plate number and police were able to find out that the car was registered to Raya's cousin, prosecutors said.

A surveillance camera posted outside the store recorded video of the shooting.
