THRISSUR: An elderly couple were allegedly beaten to death by their son with an iron rod at their house at Avinissery, near here. Police have identified the victims as Karuthedath Ramakrishnan (75) and his wife, Thankamani(70). Their son, Pradeep (47), has been arrested by the police.
According to the police, the couple were attacked by their son on Tuesday evening. They were rushed to the general hospital first and later shifted to the medical college hospital.
However, Ramakrishnan succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday evening itself, while Thankamani breathed her last on Wednesday morning.
According to the neighbours, the family disputes seem to have led to the murder. The neighbours have reportedly told the police that Pradeep, who works a woodcutter, used to come home in an inebriated condition and create ruckus at home frequently. They said that Pradeep’s wife and daughter are also now staying separately following the family disputes.
Thrissur city assistant police commissioner V K Raju said the accused will be produced in court. Raju also added that the 1.5-meter long iron rod that Pradeep used to attack his parents has been recovered.
The city police have launched a campaign to create awareness among youngsters on the need to care for the senior citizens in the backdrop of the murder at Avinissery.
