Man held on $1 million bail in Southwest Side killing of father of 3

Jan. 24--A Far South Side man appeared in court Sunday after being charged in a shooting that killed a father of three in the city's LeClaire Courts neighborhood.

Dannee Brewer, 23, of the 10400 block of South Bell Avenue in the Beverly neighborhood, was identified in a photo array as the suspect who shot and killed Quante Little, 27, on Jan. 16, according to court documents. Brewer, a documented Gangster Disciples gang member, was charged with first-degree murder and later turned himself in with his attorney present.

A Cook County judge set bail Sunday at $1 million.

Some of Little's relatives, who sat in court on Sunday, said they would've rather seen Brewer not be given bail.

"We're not satisfied with that," said April Dunlap, Little's cousin. "He killed him. He shouldn't have gotten anything, no bail, no nothing. As they say back in my day, 'Throw the book at him.'"

Bail amounts in Illinois are set in relation to the seriousness of the charges against a defendant and other factors, including the likelihood of conviction but are meant to guarantee that defendants appear in court and are not a punishment. Brewer has been charged with killing Little but has not been convicted.

The shooting was discovered at about 11:45 a.m. Jan. 16, when officers responded to a call of a man shot in the 4500 block of South Cicero Avenue. They found Little in a parking lot with a wound to the torso, police said, adding that a weapon was found at the scene.

Little was taken in serious condition to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead less than a hour later. Little, who lived in the 4500 block of West Lavergne Avenue, was shot two blocks away from his home, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. He had three children, ages 4, 1 and 4 months old.
