Man headbutted and punched his ex hours after she appeared as witness against him in court

A thug headbutted, punched, and threw a knife at his ex hours after she gave evidence against him in court.

Scott Mugliston, 23, attacked his former partner Chameera Saleh at her home in Cardiff on July 8 and called her a “f****** snitch” before unleashing a brutal assault.

The defendant had appeared before magistrates earlier that day and been sentenced to a community order for criminal damage in a case in which Ms Saleh had appeared as a witness.

During the assault Mugliston punched and headbutted Ms Saleh numerous times before taking a knife from a kitchen drawer and threatening to take his own life.

He then threw the knife at Ms Saleh who managed to escape and ran to a neighbour’s house where she called the police.

A sentencing hearing at Newport Crown Court on Friday heard Mugliston arrived at Ms Saleh’s home in Ely at around 2pm and found her in the back garden.

He called her a “f****** snitch” and a “fat f****** c***” and told her: “The windows won’t be the only thing I smash.”

What to do if you're a victim of domestic violence

Prosecutor Christopher Evans told the hearing the defendant pulled Ms Saleh by her hair to the floor and punched her to the head before grabbing hold of her neck and squeezing it for a few seconds.

She got to her feet but Mugliston headbutted her. She ran into the house followed by the defendant who continued shouting.

He told Ms Saleh he was going to kill himself and removed a knife from a kitchen drawer and made a cutting gesture before throwing the weapon at her. Ms Saleh fled the address and phoned the police from a neighbour’s house.

Mugliston was subsequently arrested and he later pleaded guilty to one account of assault by beating and one account of intimidating a witness.

The court heard Mugliston had numerous previous convictions including assaults and batteries which took place in a domestic situation.

Defence barrister Derrick Gooden said his client’s relationships had been “problematic” in the past which had led him to committing offences. He also said Mugliston had been self-harming while remanded in custody.

Sentencing, Judge Michael Fitton QC said: “Your background indicates a propensity to loss of temper, aggression, and violence – particularly to those you have been in a relationship with.”

He added: “You have not shown empathy to other people and those you have been in a relationship with before – your only concern is for yourself and not other people.

“It maybe about time for you to reflect on what you’re doing to yourself and other people.”

Mugliston, of Hiles Road, Ely, was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment and was made subject to a restraining order preventing him from contacting Ms Saleh for five years.
