Man having 'good night with friends' dies after drinking bottle of vodka

A 'handsome' and 'intelligent' man died when he fell asleep after drinking a bottle of vodka with friends.

Mikey Cunniffe, 20, was drinking with his University housemates while watching YouTube videos in October 2020.

After spending the night with friends he went to sleep but never woke up again, despite his friend's efforts to save him.

The student's mum Chrisie Yates, from Wigan, now wants young people to know just how dangerous alcohol can be after a coroner report found Mikey died from alcohol poisoning.

Chrisie, who said her son was not usually 'one for drinking', says she is able to take comfort in that fact Mikey lived his live to the full and that he didn't have to suffer when he died, the MEN reports.

She said: "You don't think it's going to happen to you until it does, on this one occasion a bottle of vodka killed him.

"He was loving life. He had a good night with his friends. He didn't wake up, but he was in no pain.

"He had a good head on his shoulders. He was very bright and he had the world at his feet. He was really generous and kind."

Mikey was a second-year mechanical engineering student at Manchester Met and was also in a band with his friends from home, having taught himself to play guitar at 15.

He also learned how to speak Spanish and Italian and enjoyed salsa dancing and mixed martial arts.

Chrisie added: "He did more in his 20 years of life than most people do in 70...He was my blue eyed boy."

Last week Mikey's step-mum Amanda Cunniffe took part in a cycle ride in his memory to raise funds for The Compassionate Friends charity.

She said: "Not many people know about this charity, me and my husband Mark (Mikey's dad) went through it all.

"We thought it was a way to support all those people who have lost children and are grieving."

Amanda mentioned a time when people had been drinking beers and watching the football and Mikey just asked for water instead, she added: "When the coroner report came through it was alcohol poisoning it was a massive shock."

Mikey's family have set up a GoFundMe page for their chosen charity The Compassionate Friends, you can donate here.

A statement on the GoFundMe page reads: "Mikey was such a handsome, intelligent young man. He was kind, compassionate and a wonderful person inside and out. "
