A man faces losing one of his legs after it was crushed in an industrial incident at Islington on Friday afternoon.

Police, paramedics and Fire and Rescue NSW were called to the Chin Chen Street business just after 2pm, following reports that about 600kg of pipes had rolled from the back of a truck and onto a 62-year-old man.

Four paramedic crews, including a specialist medical team, treated him at the scene for severe leg injuries.

The Newcastle Herald understands the man, who is believed to have been the driver, is facing the possibility of having the lower part of his right leg amputated.

He also suffered head injuries and was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition.

Police said an investigation was underway and Safe Work Australia had been notified.
