Man harassed ex with 'constant' messages and followed her on run despite police warning

A man who could not accept his relationship was over continued to send his ex “constant” messages and followed her despite a warning from police.

Mohammed Ali went to his former girlfriend’s house and followed behind her in his car when she went for a run, leaving her scared to go out of her home.

Cardiff Crown Court heard he sent her a message saying: “I love you babe and miss you.”

Complainant Katarzyna Szononik met the defendant when she was working as a dental nurse and he came in as a patient. They met again on a night out and started dating.

William Bebb, prosecuting, said she made it clear she was not looking for a serious relationship. He added: “The defendant was not on the same page as Ms Szononik.”

She told him in December last year she wanted to end the relationship and he said he did not want to break up. Mr Bebb told the court: “His persistence made her feel scared. She refused to see him anymore.”

By March 3 she felt his behaviour was escalating and reported him to the police due to his “constant” messages.

An officer spoke to him and advised him to stop contacting her immediately but he ignored the warning. Two weeks later he sent her a message asking her for a drink.

Prosecutors said he went to her home, knocked the door and looked up at her bedroom window.

Ms Szononik, who was due to be visiting a friend, did not answer and was too scared to leave her home.

On March 23 she went for a run and heard a car slow down. She saw the defendant driving and he said: “Hi babe.” She ran off and flagged down a police van.

Ali was arrested and officers searched his home where they found 11.4g of cannabis. He gave a no comment interview.

Ms Szononik said she felt threatened and has been left looking over her shoulder and avoiding certain places.

These offenders were locked up last month:

Prosecutors said he had 20 previous offences on his record. He was given a conditional discharge and made the subject of a restraining order in 2009 for harassment.

The court heard Ali was seven months into a suspended sentence when the latest offences were committed.

In August last year he was given six weeks in jail, suspended for 24 months, for stalking involving a different victim.

Prosecutors said he asked that woman for her number and she said no. She then saw him outside her work and called the police. He left a note on her car.

Ali, 38, from Splott Road in Cardiff, admitted harassment and possessing cannabis.

Ben Waters, defending, said his client found it difficult to accept the relationship was over.

He told the court Ali is having a particularly difficult time in prison during the pandemic, spending 23 hours a day in his cell and unable to have any visits.

Judge Daniel Williams jailed him for 16 weeks, ordered him to pay a £122 victim surcharge, and made a five-year restraining order.
