Man hands himself in over hit-and-run that critically injured 5yo boy

A man has turned himself in to police over an alleged hit-and-run crash that critically injured a five-year-old boy in Melbourne's south-east yesterday.

Police investigators believe a dark-coloured sedan was travelling east along Hope Street in Springvale when it hit the boy about 4:00pm.

Officers believe the driver of the car did not stop at the scene, but last night a 32-year-old man from Cranbourne West presented himself at Springvale police station.

The boy was found on the road by a nearby resident and taken to the Monash Medical Centre with life-threatening injuries.

But he was listed as in a stable condition this morning.

Police said the 32-year-old man had been released pending further enquiries and the investigation remained open.

Investigators had yesterday appealed for the public's help in finding the driver and said they believed the car would have damage to the passenger-side headlights.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
