Man handed suspended sentence for pulling knife out on tram after man threw a plastic bottle at him

A 41-year-old man has been handed a suspended sentence for brandishing a knife on a tram in Nottingham city centre.

Simon Abbott, of Heddington Gardens in Arnold, got into an argument with another man who had thrown a plastic bottle at him on a tram in Waverley Street.

Abbott then pulled a knife out during the incident which happened on May 10 at around 8pm.

Witnesses on the tram at the time saw him holding the knife and CCTV confirmed the reports.

At Nottingham Crown Court on Friday, December 20, Abbott admitted possession of a bladed article and was sentenced to six months in prison, which was suspended for 18 months.

He was also ordered to pay a £150 victim surcharge and given a three-month curfew.

PC Craig Grimley, who led the investigation, said: "The incident was witnessed by a number of people and would have been distressing for people going about their business using the tram.

"Possession of a knife in public is an offence and we will always seek to put people before the courts for carrying weapons."
