Man 'had coronavirus' and threatened to cough on gardai after throwing shopping basket at staff in Dame Street shop

A man who said he "had coronavirus" and threatened to cough on gardai after threatening shop staff has been arrested.

The man, in his 30s, was caught by gardai after threatening staff at a shop on Dame Street in Dublin city centre yesterday.

He threw a shopping basket at staff during the terrifying incident and later refused to give his name to gardai after he was located later in the day.

He'll appear before the courts tomorrow morning charged in relation to the incident.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí received reports of a man acting aggressively and threatening staff at a retail premises in the Dame Street area on 4th April 2020

"It is reported the man threw a shopping basket at staff during the incident which occurred at approximately 2:45pm. No injuries were sustained.

"The man, aged in 30s, who had left the premises was located a short time later by Gardaí.

"The man refused to provide his name to Gardaí and resisted arrest while threatening to cough on members stating he had the Coronavirus.

"The man was taken to Pearse Street Garda Station where he has since been charged in relation to this incident.

"He is due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice, Court 3, on 6th April 2020 at 10:30am."
