A TikTok user decided to cut open a Magic 8 Ball to see what’s inside, and the video has been viewed 2.3 million times.
Ayden Quinn, who goes by @artisteditz14 on the platform, filmed himself attempting to break open the toy. In the video, Quinn holds a big kitchen knife over a Magic 8 Ball sitting on some paper towels.
According to Bro Bible, he clip shows Quinn hitting the clear plastic window on the ball with the back of the knife over and over. Eventually, blue liquid starts coming out and dripping onto the paper towels below.
Quinn even touches the liquid and rubs it between his fingers while Sabrina Carpenter’s “We Almost Broke Up Last Night” plays in the background. But the video ends before he fully opens the ball, which left a lot of people feeling disappointed.
Turns out it’s not that exciting after all
People on TikTok had different reactions to what they saw. One commenter stated simply, “it’s JUST liquid.” Another person asked, “Why is it bleeding..” Some viewers had concerns about where the experiment took place. User Damian Guzman wrote, “Hey so why we doing this on top of a rug.” One person shared a relatable reaction, writing “this is me after it said ny crush didnt like me.”
So what exactly is that blue stuff? The liquid is just alcohol that has been colored blue with dye. It’s a dark blue or black liquid, usually alcohol and contains one 20-sided die.
Even though it looks like the whole ball is filled with liquid, there’s actually a smaller container inside that holds everything. The viral moment joins other TikTok stories that have sparked widespread debate and curiosity online.
The liquid has a job to do. It helps the 20-sided die float around inside the ball. When you shake it and flip it over, the die floats up to the window at the top. The die pushes the blue liquid out of the way, which lets you see the white letters on a blue background. That’s how you get your answer.
Albert C. Carter and Abe Bookman created the Magic 8 Ball back in 1946. Carter came up with the idea because his mom was a fortune teller in Cincinnati who said she could talk to spirits. She used a special device for spirit writing, and that inspired Carter to make something similar.
The first version wasn’t even shaped like a ball. It was a tube called the Syco-Seer. Carter passed away before his toy became famous. A company called Brunswick Billiards asked for it to be made in the shape of an 8-ball in 1950. These days, Mattel makes the toy.
A professor named Dr. Lucien Cohen from the University of Cincinnati came up with 20 different answers you can get from the ball. There are 10 good answers, five answers that don’t really say yes or no, and five negative answers. This mix keeps things interesting and makes people want to ask more questions.
The Magic 8 Ball has been around for a long time now. It started with Carter’s mom doing fortune telling work, but now it’s just a regular toy that millions of people have owned. You can see it in movies and TV shows, and some people even keep one on their desk at work. Like other viral TikTok moments, this video shows how people are willing to satisfy their curiosity no matter the cost.
