Man gunned down while recording Facebook Live video near NC college campus

A man was shot dead Monday while recording a Facebook Live video near Wingate University's campus in North Carolina.

The victim was walking and carrying a selfie stick when a man attacked him, firing four shots.

The video was posted on a page for Atlanta-based musician Prentis Robinson, Union County Sheriff Public Information Officer Tony Underwood confirmed.

Nearby Wingate University was placed on lockdown following the shooting, and students were informed to lock all doors and windows, "close all blinds and turn off the lights."

The Union County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the lockdown was due to the "active homicide scene" and that students were safe.

The unknown suspect _ armed with a long gun _ remained on the loose hours after the shooting.

"We're pursuing leads and trying to figure out what this is all about," Underwood said.

Robinson's friends were shocked and stunned by the shooting.

"I'm not only pissed but I'm hurt," Walter Rorie wrote. "That was a cowardly move to kill this man on his birthday!"

Facebook was not immediately available for comment following Monday's shooting, which comes less than a year after a Cleveland man Steve Stephens posted a video showing him approaching and slaying Robert Godwin Sr., 74.

The social media platform announced in May that it was hiring 3,000 people to more quickly identify and remove violent videos.
