Man guilty of sending 'menacing' emails to Yate MP Luke Hall

A man has been given a suspended jail sentence for sending his local MP "grossly offensive and menacing" emails.

Peter Semenenko was charged with breaching Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003 by sending the emails to Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall.

Magistrates heard how the 65-year-old, from Bristol Road in Frampton Cotterell, South Gloucestershire, sent the first email on January 19 this year, and the last one on March 22.

The charge was that he sent 'by means of a public electronic communications network, emails that were grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character.

Semenenko denied the charge, and pleaded 'not guilty' at a hearing before magistrates on April 30 this year.

His trial at Bristol Magistrates Court happened on October 17, and he was found guilty.

He was handed a 9 week sentence suspended for 12 months.

Magistrates said the reason they handed him the sentence was because of "the number of grossly offensive and menacing messages sent to a Member of Parliament that caused him to fear for his and his family's safety".

Semenenko was also made the subject of a restraining order to not have any direct contact with Luke Hall or his family in person, via email or any other forms of communication, and not to have any direct contact with his offices in Chipping Sodbury.
