Man gives out free hugs in Ayrshire town to raise awareness of suicide prevention

A Kilwinning man is spending hours giving out free hugs on the street to raise awareness of suicide prevention.

Alan Asbury decided to offer up the simple act of affection in his hometown following a number of tragic and untimely deaths in recent years.

He kicked off his campaign of kindness yesterday in Kilwinning town centre, holding a 'Free Hugs' sign and encouraging people to interact with him.

Alan, a former student of James Watt College, admits he has been blown away by the public's response - both on the streets and social media.

He said: "I have never lost anyone to suicide but in the past few years Kilwinning has lost a lot of young people to suicide and it has to stop.

"I will be starting a new job next week but my plan is every night after work to stand either in town or at Aldos chip shop holding a sign saying Free hugs, less suicide, let's make a difference."

"I am not looking for any money or any awards but if I can make a difference simply just by offering a hug it could make a big difference to someone's life when needed the most.

"Anyone is welcome to join me as they wish. "It's about time this town starts to have a bit of healing and honour those who have passed away and maybe just maybe prevent someone else from taking their life too soon!!

"A small kind gesture can help save lives."
