A TikTok user named Ethan Levy recently shared a story about how he got out of a speeding ticket by using an unusual excuse: he was scared of a Tesla Cybertruck. The TikTok video has been watched over 87,000 times, and it shows Levy talking about what happened when a police officer pulled him over.
Levy says he was driving way over the speed limit when the officer stopped him. He was actually going about 20 mph over the posted 50 mph limit, but he told the officer he was only going 12 mph over. When the officer asked why he was driving so fast, Levy knew he was in trouble and might get a big ticket.
Then Levy saw a Cybertruck driving past them and made up an excuse right there. “You see that Cybertruck?” he told the officer. “Well, sir, I didn’t really feel comfortable around it. I was scared it was going to blow up.” The officer looked at the truck and said, “Well, Mr. Levy, that’s actually a pretty valid reason. I could see that fear.” The officer told Levy that if his license was clean and he had no warrants, he could go. Everything was fine, so Levy drove away without getting a ticket.
This isn’t the first time people have blamed the Cybertruck for unusual situations
The Cybertruck has become pretty famous since Tesla started selling it, and many people have strong opinions about it. Some people really don’t like the vehicle. One person who commented on Levy’s video wrote, “I admit to anyone and everyone I have an irrational hatred of Cybertrucks.” Another person said that in their family, spotting a Cybertruck is like a game where everyone screams when they see one.
The truck has also been in some bad accidents that might explain why people worry about it. In November 2024, three college students died in Piedmont, California, when a Cybertruck crashed and caught fire. The families of two of the victims are now suing Tesla. They say the electronic door system stopped working after the crash, which trapped the passengers inside the burning truck. The lawsuits also say the truck’s metal body is so tough that it’s hard for rescuers to break in from outside.
According to a retired police officer named Jason Hoschouer, whether you get a ticket or just a warning depends on a few things. Your attitude matters, your driving history matters, and sometimes being funny can help too. Studies show that 48% of drivers who ask for a warning and don’t make excuses actually get one.
For Levy, his clean driving record, being honest about speeding, and his strange but funny excuse probably all helped. But not everyone gets off so easy. Some people have run into trouble with law enforcement over what seemed like small things that turned into big fines.
The story has gotten a lot of attention online, with many people finding it funny and others wondering if it will actually work for them. Levy even captioned his TikTok video with “don’t tell them you got it from me,” suggesting that maybe his trick was a one-time thing. Whether his Cybertruck excuse was the real reason he got off or just lucky timing, the story shows how sometimes a quick think and a bit of humor can change things. Of course, police interactions can go very differently depending on the situation, as seen in other recent confrontations between communities and local authorities.
