Detectives are appealing for information following the report of an attempted hijacking in Belfast in the early hours of this morning.

The incident, which seen a man 'get into the back seat of a car stopped at traffic lights', is said to have occurred in the north of the city on Friday.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "A report was made to police shortly before 2.10am that a male approached a silver Toyota Yaris vehicle, which was sitting at traffic lights at the top of Donegall Street.

"The male had a verbal exchange with the driver before getting into the back seat of the car. He then got out of the car and reached for the driver’s door.

"Thankfully, the driver was able to drive away from the suspect.

"A 35-year-old man was later arrested in the area on suspicion of attempted hijacking and interference with vehicles and he remains in custody, assisting with enquiries.
