Man gets free flights for the rest of his life after boarding plane at airport

A man boarding a flight for a trip with friends was surprised with free flights for the rest of his life. Ikechi Chima Apakama only learned he was the winner after landing at his destination.

He received the special prize for being the one millionth passenger on PLAY Airlines. Ikechi and his friends were travelling from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to Keflavik International Airport in Iceland.

Following take off on February 17, the crew handed out gift bags, prosecco and cakes to all passengers. They then announced the plane was carrying PLAY‘s one millionth passenger - and to mark the occasion, they would give this person free flights for life.

Upon landing Ikechi was met with a surprise celebratory party and was told he was the millionth passenger. Alongside free PLAY flights for life, he also received a coat and hat from Icelandic brand, Cintamani.

He and his friends then travelled on to their destination from Keflavik Airport in style - complete with a Cadillac full of goodies.

PLAY operates flights between Liverpool and Iceland. Once passengers get to Keflavík International Airport, they can then change onto services to American destinations including New York, Boston and Washington DC. The prize means Ikechi will be able to travel for free to and from any destination PLAY flies from.

Chief executive Birgir Jónsson said: "I want to thank each one of the one million guests who chose to fly with PLAY and the PLAY team for delivering our award-winning service. Reaching one million passengers is a huge milestone for a new airline that only 18 months ago was facing a global pandemic and unprecedented travel restrictions."
