Man gets 80 years in 2009 gang slaying on West Side

Nov. 20--A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 80 years in prison Friday for a 2009 shooting that killed a high-ranking rival gang member and injured a Chicago Housing Authority employee.

Lonnial Roundtree was convicted earlier of murder and aggravated battery with a firearm in an April 23 shooting that killed Raymond Washington, and injured a CHA inspector, prosecutors said.

According to the Cook County State's Attonery's office, Roundtree and Reginal Royal had planned to shoot Washington. Both men approached him while he was outside his home in the 3800 block of West Flournoy Street, while a CHA inspector was examining tuck pointing on the home.

Roundtree and Royal, who were driven to the scene by another person, jumped out of a vehicle and opened fire, prosecutors said. Washington, who officials said was a high-ranking gang member, and the CHA inspector were both struck by gunfire, prosecutors said.

Washington, 38, of the same block where the shooting happened, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:17 p.m. that day, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

During the attack, nearby officers heard the gunfire and responded to the scene and saw Roundtree and Royal enter a vehicle and drive off. The officers chased the vehicle and arrested both men, and retrieved the weapons used in the shooting, prosecutors said.

Cook County Judge Mary Margaret Brosnahan sentenced Roundtree to 80 years in prison Friday. Royal was previously sentenced to 80 years and is currently serving his time.
