Man gets 38 years in 2014 slaying of livery driver

May 10--One of two men who were convicted earlier in the 2014 slaying of a cabdriver on the South Side was sentenced Monday to 38 years in prison.

Prosecutors said Courtney Ealy, 21, had been released from jail on a robbery probation violation two weeks before Javan Boyd, 28, was shot dead Feb. 22.

About 4 a.m. that day, Boyd, who had worked for a South Side cab dispatch service, was sitting in his car and waiting for a passenger in the 3700 block of South Princeton Avenue, according to court records.

Three cars drove past, but the first car, containing Ealy and Clint Massey, a Chicago rapper who performs as "RondoNumbaNine," made a U-turn and pulled up next to Boyd. The two got out and walked up to the passenger side of Boyd's car and asked him was he from the neighborhood, according to court records.

When Boyd replied yes, Ealy and Massey opened his car door and fired into the car, striking Boyd seven times. The two then jumped back into their vehicle, and all three cars fled the scene, prosecutors said.

Boyd was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died.

Investigators found Ealy's phone outside Boyd's car, and both Ealy's and Massey's fingerprints were discovered on the vehicle, according to court records. The shooting was captured by Chicago Housing Authority video surveillance.

Ealy was convicted in March of first-degree murder in Boyd's death.

Boyd, who lost his mother and three younger siblings in a 1994 fire at the Robert Taylor Homes housing complex, was working as a cabdriver to support his fiancee and young daughter, relatives said earlier.

Massey is awaiting sentencing.
