Nov. 14--A 56-year-old man was sentenced to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty earlier to a 2014 fatal stabbing of a woman he had dated, officials said.
Hector Rivera had was charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Erendira Pimentel, who was stabbed more than 20 times, prosecutors said.
Police were called Aug. 27, about 8:30 a.m., to the 4700 block of North Lawndale Avenue in the city's Albany Park neighborhood. When they arrived, officers found a woman who had suffered multiple stab wounds. She was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment.
Pimentel, 38, of the 5000 block of West Grand Avenue, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 12:40 p.m. that day, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Prosecutors said about 8:15 a.m. that day, Rivera approached Pimentel near her workplace and stabbed her in the face, torso and arms before fleeing. Several witnesses at the scene identified him as Pimentel's attacker, prosecutors said.
When Rivera was arrested three days later, he admitted to police that he killed Pimentel, prosecutors said. He later pleaded guilty to the crime.
Cook County Judge Thomas Gainer sentenced Rivera Friday to 30 years in prison.
