Man gets 28 years in robbery, fatal attack on senior

Oct. 31--A man has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for a 2012 attack where he robbed and pushed down a 78-year-old man who later died from complications of a fractured hip, prosecutors announced Friday.

Dalvin Rayford, now 20, of the 2500 block of East 72nd Place, pleaded guilty Thursday to armed robbery in connection with the Dec. 10, 2012 attack in the city's South Deering neighborhood.

Shortly before 3 p.m. that day, J.W. Moore, 78, left his Far South Side home for a walk when he was thrown to the ground and robbed at gunpoint near 102nd Street and Bensley Avenue, said relatives and police in 2012.

Prosecutors said Rayford demanded money from Moore before knocking him to the ground and rummaging through Moore's pockets for his money and keys. A neighbor saw Moore being attacked and called police. Rayford fled when the neighbor started to yell but was caught a short time later when police saw him running through an alley and clutching his side, said prosecutors.

Police recovered a weapon, and Rayford, then 18, was charged with armed robbery in the attack.

After the robbery, Moore's relatives said he was recovering at home from injuries suffered in the atttack.

"He did have some damage to his head, ribs, and his knee area," a relative said at the time. "He was definitely a little distraught."

But later Moore was admitted into hospice care and died weeks after due to complications from a hip fracture in an assault, said prosecutors.

Raylord pleaded guilty to armed robbery and was sentenced by Cook County Judge Michael McHale to 28 years in prison.
