Man fumes as stepsister attempts to redecorate his house - without telling him

If you've ever had to stay with a friend or family member for a little while, you might have felt compelled to take on some chores around the house to let the homeowner know you appreciate their hospitality. But would you take it upon yourself to redecorate without even asking them for their thoughts first?

That's what one man has claimed his stepsister tried to do, when she came home with several cans of pink paint which she intended to use to paint the guest room she's been staying in - even though she'll only be there for two months. The man explained his stepsister is living with him temporarily, but she wants the guest room to feel more like her own space, so wants to redecorate it to her taste.

In a Reddit post, the man said: "I own a pretty big house that I inherited from my grandparents. I'm currently letting my stepsister, Kana, stay in one of my guest rooms for two months rent free.

"Everything has been going smooth until two days ago when Kana came in the house with cans of paint. I asked her what she was doing with those and she told me that she was going to paint her room pink.

"I told her no because she's only staying here temporarily and I like the way the room is now. Kana said that she's currently staying in the room and she should have a right to be able to decorate the room how she wants it.

"I told her that even though she’s staying in there it’s still my house and if she does the paint the room she will be kicked out. Kana got mad and called me a dick. My dad and stepmum think that I was too harsh and I could have compromised with her.

"I feel like I have a right to not want the room painted."

The man later returned to the post to update it, where he explained that Kana had been living with him while her parents get their house renovated, as they are staying two hours away and Kana has a job nearby.

He also said that after their argument over the paint, Kana decided to go and stay with her parents, even though it now means a two-hour commute to work every morning until renovations on the family house are finished.

Commenters on the post were largely on the man's side though, with many saying that as Kana was staying at his house rent-free, she shouldn't expect to be able to make major decorating changes.

One person said: "It's YOUR house. She staying RENT FREE. Tell your dad and stepmum to take her in and she can paint their room pink."

While another added: "She can make temporary changes but painting is a permanent change that she has to clear with the owner of the property i.e, you. She has no 'rights' to do anything with your property."

And a third wrote: "Entitled people frustrate me to no end! You let her live there rent-free for 2 months and somehow you are the a**hole for not letting her act like she owns the place."
