The man was injured after falling to the bottom of a freshly dug grave.

Emergency crews have freed a man who was injured after falling into a newly dug grave at Eltham, in Melbourne's north east.

Ambulance Victoria was called to the Eltham Cemetery just before 8:00am, following reports a man in his 40s had fallen into the two-metre-deep hole.

Thirteen firefighting crews attended the scene, as they worked to stabilise the grave before rescuing the man.

He suffered leg injuries and was assessed by paramedics on the scene.
