A man died Monday after he was found with a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest in the Block 37 mall in the Loop, authorities say.

Two people in the restroom in the 100 block of North State Street heard the sound of a gunshot inside a stall about 10:40 a.m., according to Chicago police.

The man was found in the stall with “what is thought to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” a fire official said.

The man, 24, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to the side of his chest and pronounced dead, police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. Detectives are conducting a death investigation.

A police source said Monday evening that the gunshot wound appeared to be self-inflicted.

The medical examiner’s office said a ruling on the cause and manner of his death was pending Tuesday.
