Man found with knives and axe near Falkirk mental health hospital jailed

A man found with what a sheriff described as "an arsenal" of knives has been jailed.

Robert Laidlaw, 31, was found with the knives, together with an axe, during an incident last May (2021) at a location near Bellsdyke Hospital in Larbert, Stirlingshire.

Two months later, in July 2021, he was arrested after he took another knife from his pocket and brandished it at two men in Bo'ness, West Lothian.

Falkirk Sheriff Court heard that this followed an incident in which documents, a jewellery case, jewellery and trinkets were stolen from a house at Stacks Farm, Carriden Brae, Bo'ness.

Appearing by video link from Low Moss Prison, Laidlaw, of Blackness, also West Lothian, pleaded guilty to possessing the knives and axe without a reasonable excuse; theft; and using threatening and abusive behaviour.

Sheriff Christopher Shead said Laidlaw had been in possession of "what is clearly an arsenal of weapons".

He said Laidlaw had a "significant" previous conviction for violence, and a recent previous conviction for dishonesty.

He jailed Laidlaw for 22-and-a-half months, backdating the sentence to July 21st 2021, when he was first taken into custody.
