Man found wandering A470 with hypothermia on Christmas Day

A man was taken to hospital after he was seen staggering into the carriageway of a major road on December 25.

It appears that a Christmas Day walk up Pen Y Fan, the highest peak in south Wales, took a potentially dangerous turn when a motorist spotted the man on the nearby A470 and raised the alarm.

South Wales Police received a call reporting that someone was walking along the A470 in dark clothing and "staggering into the road."

Brecon Roads Policing tweeted about the incident, saying that a man suffering from the effects of hypothermia had been located as a result of the call. He had been walking up Pen Y Fan and become disorientated.

The man was taken to A&E to be checked out and his current condition is now known. The temperature in the area on Christmas Day ranged between 4°C and 8°C.

The A470 runs through the Brecon Beacons and connects some of the more remote and isolated parts of the national park between Brecon and Merthyr Tydfil .

The road is about two miles from the summit of Pen Y Fan which is 886m above sea level.
