Man found unconscious in sub zero temperatures after 'disturbance' on Scots train

A man was found unconscious on a street in Gourock after an alleged disturbance on a train.

Members of the public raced to aid the man, who has suffered facial injuries, on Shore Street on Saturday, December 10. Medics attended the scene after 9pm and took the 48-year-old to Inverclyde Royal Hospital for treatment, where his current condition is unknown.

Officers have launched a probe into the incident and wish to speak to a group of young men who were in their area at the time. Police inquiries so far have suggested a disturbance broke out on a train from Glasgow Central Station to Gourock shortly before 9pm.

A man who is described as white, in his 20s, of a slim build and with dark hair, who was wearing a dark coat, was believed to have been involved in the incident. He appeared to be alone but as he alighted the train, he joined the company of other men outside Gourock Train Station, who were all casually dressed and are described to be in their 20s.

Officers are appealing to anybody who may have been on the train, or anybody who may have been in the area at the time of the attack, to come forward.

Detective Constable Ruth Elder, of Greenock CID, said: “We are keen to speak to a group of young men, one of whom had been on the train from Glasgow which arrived in Gourock just before 9pm. From our enquiries so far, we believe there was a disturbance on the train involving a man who is described as white, in his 20s, of a slim build, with dark hair and wearing a dark coat.

“He appeared to be alone, however, when he alighted from the train he joined the company of other men outside Gourock Train Station, all casually dressed and in their 20s. A number of people came to the injured man’s aid and we have managed to speak to them but we would like to talk to anyone who was on the train or who may have seen an incident take place outside the train station on Shore Street.

“Officers are checking local CCTV from and would ask that anyone with information that may assist their investigation to contact police."

Officers from Police Scotland can be reached via 101 quoting incident number 1141 of Sunday, December 11, 2022. Alternatively, details can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
