A man who was discovered lying in the road with serious head injuries on New Year's Day has died in hospital.

The man was found by a member of the public with serious head injuries in the middle of the road close to the Chandlers Reach estate, Llantwit Fadre, in the early hours of January 1.

He was taken to the Royal Glamorgan Hospital where he was said to be in a critical condition. Police on Friday confirmed the 57-year-old man, who they have not yet named but was from the local area, has since died.

A post-mortem examination to establish the man's cause of death is due to be carried out in due course.

Officers investigating the circumstances around this incident are continuing to appeal for information from anybody who was in the area of Chandlers Reach and Crown Hill between midnight and 1.45am on New Year's Day.

They added: "We can confirm that the man who was discovered with serious head injuries by a member of the public in the middle of a road in Llantwit Fadre in the early hours of Wednesday has since died in hospital."

Neighbours in Chandlers Reach said they were told a man was found in the middle of the road by a driver who contacted the emergency services.

Some witnesses saw the man being treated by paramedics in Chandlers Reach having been moved from Crown Hill where he was found initially.
