Man found out his fiancée was his cousin after they'd had kids

A man married his partner and went on to have kids with her - even after finding out they were related.

Jesse Stay found out his fiancee was actually his distant cousin - but the pair had already had kids by this point.

Jesse told his unusual story on his TikTok account, West Elm Jesse, sharing a clip which explained the family connection.

Jesse, who is the author of TikTok For Dummies, according to The Sun, explained in the video: "Turns out my ex and I were third cousins once removed.

"My ex and I were engaged and I ended up taking a family history class and while I was taking it...

"I went in and I was looking over my genealogy and I shared it with my then fiancee and she recognised the name on there and I’m like oh s***

"We had the same common ancestor and we did the calculations which made us third cousins once removed which meant her dad was my third cousin and our kids are actually technically our fourth cousins."

Jesse says he is from a Mormon family where it can be common to discover you and your partner have distant relatives in common.

He said: "You can technically marry your third cousin once removed but we do kind of look alike round here.

The video has since been viewed more than 5,000 views with some saying they had similar experiences.

One man said: "I dated a coworker and found out AFTERWARDS we were cousins (not biologically but STILL)."

Another said: "Oh boy... I feel ya. My MIL and I share the same Great Great Grandfather but different Grandmothers (yay polygamy)."

Another added: "I mean it's not surprising considering most of the Mormons came from the same places at the same time."
