Man found not guilty of throwing partner down stairs during argument

A man has been acquitted of throwing his partner down the stairs during a domestic argument.

Austin Pearce was alleged to have "flung" Catherine McNeil down a flight of steps at her home, leaving her bruised and bloodied and with a broken wrist.

The 43-year-old carpenter denied assaulting the woman, saying he had been playing a video game at the time of the incident and his partner had simply fallen down the flight of steps.

A jury took less than an hour to find Pearce not guilty of causing grievous bodily harm.

Swansea Crown Court heard the incident happened on December 22 last her at Ms McNeil's house in Baglan .

It was the prosecution case that following an argument, during which he was told to leave the property, Pearce pushed the woman up the stairs before turning around and "flinging" her back down.

Ms McNeil was subsequently taken first to Neath Port Talbot Hospital and then Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend where she was treated for a broken wrist.

Pearce, of Curwen Close, Efail Fach, Pontrhydyfen , maintained there had been no argument and no assault.

He said he had been in a bedroom playing a Tiger Woods golf game on his PlayStation console at around 9.30pm when he heard a bang like a "hollow thud", and found his partner lying on the floor at the bottom of the stairs.

The court heard both parties had consumed alcohol on the night in question.

Pearce cried in the dock as the jury returned its not guilty verdict.
