Man found in river after walking away from M6 crash dies

A man from Stockport has died after a car crash in Cumbria.

Derek Wroe, 50, from Reddish, died after crashing on the M6 on Saturday (March 27).

Emergency services were called at around 2:50pm to a report that a car had collided with the nearside barrier of the motorway.

The collision involved an Audi A5 and happened on the northbound carriageway near Roundthwaite, south of junction 38 (Tebay).

Witnesses told police that a man, believed to be the driver of the Audi, had left the scene on foot, heading in the direction of the A685.

Police say the man was then involved in a collision with a vehicle on the A685 before leaving the area towards Tebay fellside.

He was found in a nearby river by police and taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle where he sadly died.

A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: "He has been formally identified as Derek Wroe, aged 50, of Houldsworth Street, Stockport."
