Man found guilty of murdering neighbour in frenzied attack at east London block of flats

Raish Ahmed was stabbed to death outside his home in east London (Metropolitan Police/PA) -

A man has been convicted of fatally stabbing his neighbour in a frenzied attack inside the block of flats they lived at in Canning Town.

Daniel Whybrow, 46, of Hartington Road, Newham, repeatedly stabbed 50-year-old Raish Ahmed outside his home on October 5 last year.

Mr Ahmed died two days later in hospital and Whybrow was found guilty of murder on Friday, August 22, following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

He will be sentenced on September 3.

The court was told that earlier on the day of October 5, 2024, a dispute broke out between the two neighbours, who lived in the same block of flats in Hartington Road, about the main entrance door being left open.

Mr Ahmed told his wife that Whybrow had tried to attack him as he left his home and then called his friend to meet him before returning to the flats, where they saw Whybrow.

A clash broke out between the men, before Whybrow went to his kitchen window and grabbed a knife from inside.

He began to shout “I will kill you” before trying to attack Mr Ahmed’s friend.

CCTV and footage reviewed by detectives then showed Whybrow turning his attention to Mr Ahmed and stabbing him multiple times, continuing even after the victim fell to the floor and tried to defend himself with a steering lock he had picked up.

A teenage boy was also injured by Whybrow as he attempted to protect Mr Ahmed.

Emergency services were called and neighbours went to help Mr Ahmed and also fend off Whybrow.

Mr Ahmed was treated by paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance before being taken to hospital.

The teenage boy was also taken to hospital, where his injuries were found to be neither life-threatening nor life-changing.

After the attack, Whybrow returned to his flat and was arrested by officers who had quickly determined he was a suspect.

He was originally charged on October 6, 2024, with attempted murder, but this was changed to murder following Mr Ahmed’s death on October 7.

Whybrow was acquitted of racially aggravated assault and threats to kill against Mr Ahmed’s friend who was present at the scene of the murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Samantha Townsend, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Unit, said: “This incident has led to the needless and tragic loss of Raish Ahmed. Violence like this serves no purpose but to devastate families and wound communities.

"My thoughts are with the loved ones of all affected.”
