Authorities are investigating the death of a man found Tuesday morning with a gunshot wound in a Humboldt Park alley.

Witnesses said they heard a gunshot shortly before 6 a.m. and then found a man unresponsive in an alley in the 2900 block of West North Avenue, according to Chicago police.

Paramedics found a 43-year-old man bleeding with a gunshot wound to the side of his head, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A weapon was found near his body, police said.

It was not immediately clear if the man shot himself or was killed by someone else.

A police investigation into the death is pending a ruling on the manner of death by the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Autopsy results are expected to be released Wednesday afternoon.
