Police have launched an investigation after a man was found dead lying on the ground in a Nottinghamshire town.

Emergency services were called to Slaughterhouse Lane, Newark-on-Trent, shortly after 8.30pm on Thursday July 1.

The man, who was in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene, the force confirmed.

His family has been informed and police are investigating the circumstances that led up to his death, which is being treated as "unexplained".

Detective Sergeant Ricky Ellis, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “We are working to understand the movements of the victim in the hours and minutes leading up to his death.

“He is white and was wearing blue jeans and a dark coloured checked shirt at the time of the incident.”

Nottinghamshire Police added: "Our investigations in the area are ongoing and we are also asking anyone with any additional information to call 101 quoting incident 867 of 1 July."
