Man found dead in water at Salford Quays identified

The body of a man found in the water at Salford Quays has been named as Martin Whelan.

Police were alerted to reports of a body in the water near to the MediaCity tram stop on Easter Monday at midday.

The body has since been formally identified as Martin Whelan, 46, from Salford.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, but police are treating it as unexplained.

Greater Manchester Police are appealing for anyone with further information to come forward.

Insp Joanne Kay of GMP’s Salford District, said: “Our thoughts are with Martin’s family at this incredibly difficult time and we’re committed to finding out the full circumstances surrounding his death.

“While his death is being treated as non-suspicious, we’re appealing for anyone who might have seen Martin in the days preceding his body being found, or anyone with information, to contact us.”

Information can be left with police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
