Man found dead in 'suspicious' fire in Edinburgh's Grange area

Police are appealing for witnesses of 'suspicious activity' after a man was found dead in a burning house in the Grange.

Emergency services were alerted to the fire in Chalmers Crescent at 8.20am.

Firefighters found the ground floor flat of the property alight and entered to rescue a female in her 20s from the building. She was given medical attention at the scene before being taken by ambulance to hospital.

No further information about the dead man has been released.

Police and fire officers are now carrying out investigations to establish the cause of the blaze. Police tape currently cordons off the street between Palmerston Road and Grange Road.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman confirmed officers were treating the fire as suspicious. They said:

"At this time inquiries are at an early stage, and we are working with the fire service in order to establish the cause of the blaze.

"We are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Chalmers Crescent at the time the fire broke out, who noticed any suspicious activity, to contact police immediately on 0131 311 3131, or anonymously through Crimestoppers in 0800 555 111."
