Man found dead in Lawndale fire

A man was found dead in a burning home Monday in Lawndale on the West Side.

The 35-year-old was found dead in the basement about 12:37 a.m. in the 3900 block of West Fillmore, Chicago police said.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Vernell Maurice Cleveland. He lived in Lawndale.

Five other people in the home were able to escape the blaze uninjured, police said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Chicago Fire Department is investigating.

Confirmed One (1) adult fire fatality from the working fire at 3927 W. Fillmore. Per standard procedure fire is under investigation, NFI 4-1-8.
