A young man has died after an altercation in broad daylight in Canberra's city centre on Saturday morning.

Police were called to Garema Place in Civic about 9:45am after reports a man had collapsed.

Despite attempts to revive him, the man died at the scene.

Detective Superintendent Scott Moller said police had arrested one man over the incident, which he referred to as a murder.

He also thanked members of the public, police and ambulance who attempted to provide assistance to the man who later died.

Superintendent Moller said the man who died was Indigenous and extended his sympathies to the community.

"I'd also like to acknowledge that the male that died today was Indigenous, certainly from ACT Policing's perspective we'd like to show our sympathies to the Indigenous community," he said.

It is not yet clear how the man died, but officers were seen interviewing bystanders throughout the morning.

Superintendent Moller urged any witnesses to come forward.

"There's a multitude of witnesses, but if there are any witnesses out there who haven't spoken to police, I'd ask them to come forward," he said.

Police also reassured Canberrans that there was no threat to the public as a result of the incident.

Forensics police arrived at the scene about midday, alongside plain-clothed detectives.

They cordoned off an alleyway near the corner of Mort Street and City Walk, and erected white screens to hide the scene.

Several people were seen hugging and crying near the police cordon.

The investigation is ongoing.
