Man found dead at Swansea Prison

A man has been discovered dead at Swansea Prison.

Officers discovered Leon Peter Owens in his cell on the morning of September 19.

An inquest into the 24-year-old’s death was opened at Swansea Civic Centre.

Sergeant Steve White told the hearing Mr Owens had seen a doctor 10 days before his body was discovered, in relation to low moods.

He was diagnosed with manic depression and was prescribed medication.

Assistant coroner Aled Gruffydd, noting it was ‘an unnatural death in custody’ adjourned for a full inquest next year.

A Prison Service Spokesman: “HMP Swansea prisoner Leon Owens died in custody on 19 September.

"The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman has been informed.”
