Man found dead after van 'plunged from cliffs' near fishing village beauty spot

A man has been found dead in a van which is said to have plunged from a cliff at a beauty spot.

The wrecked vehicle was spotted at the bottom of the cliffs near the fishing village of Staithes, Scarborough, North Yorkshire, today.

Police were called to the scene at around 7.15am this morning and discovered the driver, a local man, dead inside the van, Teesside Live reports.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: "Police and Coastguard colleagues attended an incident whereby a vehicle was found at the base of cliffs in Cowbar around 7.15am on Wednesday 9 December.

"Sadly, the driver, a local man, was found dead in the vehicle.

"The man has not yet been formally identified, however, his family have been informed and our thoughts remain with them at this extremely difficult time.

"The death is being treated as unexplained at this time, and officers are continuing with their enquiries into the circumstances that led up to the vehicle being discovered at the base of the cliffs."

Police have taped off the road as investigations continue.

The RNLI has confirmed that its team at Staithes was in attendance.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoman said earlier on Wednesday: "We were called at 9am to reports of a vehicle having gone over the cliff edge on Cowbar Lane.

"We sent one ambulance, the Coastguard also attended."
