Man flown to John Hunter after leg 'impaled on fence post' overnight

A MAN has been flown to the John Hunter Hospital after becoming impaled on a fence post in the early hours of Tuesday.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service was called into action about 2.30am after reports the man's injury had trapped him at Kariong.

"Reports from scene was that a 57-year-old male was climbing the fence when he slipped and impaled his left leg," the service said in a statement.

Paramedics also attempted, removing the man from the post alongside the critical care medical team.

It is understood he suffered severe leg injuries.

The aircraft flew the man to the Newcastle hospital in a serious but stable condition.
