Man flees with baby in his arms as Land Rover smashes through Costco car park

This is the moment a Land Rover careered out of control in a supermarket car park, sending a man running for safety with a child in his arms.

The accident happened in a Costco car park when a pensioner is said to have lost consciousness at the wheel.

Footage widely shared online shows the Land Rover hurtling forward and smashing into numerous parked cars outside the Haydock store.

At one point, the wheels of the 4x4 vehicle mount the side of another car, almost flipping it over, before it lands back down on the tarmac.

A man, who is walking a small child by the hand, hears the sound of collisions, looks back and grabs the child.

He sprints out of the way as the Land Rover crashes into more cars before coming to a halt.

Yesterday, the ECHO reported how the incident happened on Andover Road in Haydock, St Helens, at about midday on Sunday.

Up to eight vehicles were involved as the driver, a man in his 70s, was said to have lost consciousness at the wheel.

The off road vehicle crashed into a white van. and then pushed a Nissan into metal trolley barriers before hitting a Ford Focus into a number of parked cars.

No injuries were reported and the driver was medically assessed at the scene.

Police said the driver was not under the influence of alcohol and enquiries are ongoing.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: “We were called to Costco on Andover Road around midday yesterday (Monday 7 December) to reports of a Land Rover colliding with eight parked cars.

“No injuries were caused and the driver, a man in his 70s, was medically assessed.

“He provided a negative breath test at the scene and enquiries are ongoing.”
