Man flees after assaulting a Leeds officer - only for sergeant to spot him on his way home

Police searched an area of Leeds after a police officer was assaulted - to find the suspect had fled.

But West Yorkshire Police have been praised after the man was arrested later on - after being spotted by a sergeant on his way home!

The incident happened on Tuesday evening when an officer from West Yorkshire Police was assaulted in Leeds.

The suspect was able to escape the scene and could not be located by police.

Officers searched for the scene for him before leaving.

A sergeant later clocked off from work - and spotted the suspect on his drive home, and arrested him.

A post from West Yorkshire Police said: "City Cops assisted our colleagues over at West Yorkshire Police, tonight after an officer was assaulted earlier in the evening.

"Unfortunately the suspect was not located until the Sergeant drove past him on the way home."

The suspect is now in police custody.

Shared across social media, the post has received an array of comments.

John Golladay said: "If you've just assaulted a police officer and have got away with it, wouldn't you want to sort of, lie low? Anyway, brilliant stuff from everyone involved in apprehending him!"

Whilst Kiara White added: "Another fool got what they had coming."
