Man finishes third Edinburgh Kiltwalk for homeless charity despite battling cancer

The Edinburgh Kiltwalk saw thousands of people help to raise money for good causes, and one man has a particularly inspiring story.

Kevin Robinson finished the "Wee Wander" of the Kiltwalk despite battling a rare form of abdominal cancer.

He was taking part in the to raise money for the Grassmarket Community Project, a scheme which helps homeless people in Edinburgh city centre.

It's the third year in a row he's taken on the challenge and the project say they're enormously grateful.

Kevin says the project "struck a chord" with him and walked more than five miles despite being in significant pain.

He was aiming to raise £2,000 for the charity. The form of cancer he has is incurable and he needs several different types of chemotherapy.

Kevin posted an update on his crowdfunding page after finishing the walk on Sunday.

He said: "MADE IT!!! Legs did ok but the Chemo related blood clots I've had in my lungs have apparently done more damage than I thought!!!"

He had hoped to do the 14.5 mile "Big Stroll" but the side effects of his chemotherapy made this impossible.

Explaining his reasons for taking on the challenge, he said: "It’s charity that has struck a chord with me. So, for the past couple of years, I’ve completed the Kiltwalk despite some challenging medical conditions.

"The Grassmarket Community Project provide lonely, isolated and vulnerable people with a central focus where they can not only receive mentoring, training and education in a nurturing environment, but the project develops skills which enable participants to develop to their full potential and create more positive life opportunities."

The community project thanked him for his efforts, saying: "This man despite having cancer and being in considerable pain insisted on raising money for our charity for the third year in a row by completing the Wee Wander at Edinburgh Kiltwalk 2019.

"Kevin Robinson we salute you!"

Others taking part in this year's Kiltwalk included the parents of Joanna Lamb, the Edinburgh teenager who sadly lost her fight with bone cancer earlier this year.
