A speeding motorist has been fined after travelling from Nottingham to London during the coronavirus lockdown to “buy bread because it was £1 cheaper”.

Leicestershire road policing unit (LRPU) pulled the driver over after the car was spotted travelling on the M1 northbound at 110mph.

The force said he had two young children in the car and had been reported to court.

The motorist claimed to be on a trip to “buy bread because it was £1 cheaper” in the capital.

In a tweet, LRPU said: “Just stopped a car doing 110mph on the M1 north.

“The purpose of the journey from Nottingham? To buy bread in London because it was £1 cheaper.

“He also had his 2 young children in the car! Reported to court. #thatcouldcostsomedough #StayAtHomeSaveLives”.

Social media users took to Twitter to share their disbelief at what had happened: "The cost of the extra petrol........," one user said.

Another added: "You should have told him, it's even cheaper to bake his own."

"In examples like this, £60 fine seems highly inadequate. Ten times that would be more appropriate," said another.

A fixed penalty notice was given by the officers who stopped the driver but given the speed they were reportedly driving at, the driver will automatically be reported to court.

The second notice was under the Health Protection Regulations 2020, which comes with a £60 fine.

It came into force last month to give police powers to punish anyone flouting lockdown restrictions.
