Man fined £10,000 after police rush in amid reports of up to 300 people at wedding

A man has been fined £10,000 after up to 300 people attended a wedding in breach of lockdown restrictions.

Police were forced to attend after receiving calls from 5pm from the public about the wedding celebration at a farm in Leeds.

One caller reported that a fight had broken out - and West Yorkshire Police were told that between 100 and 300 people were at the event.

The large gathering came on the same day that extra lockdown measures were imposed on the city.

Now a landowner has been issued a £10,000 fine over the incident at the weekend at a marquee on land at Scarecrow Farm, in Whitehall Road, New Farnley.

Officers attended the area and found a "large number of people" and loud music around a marquee in woods, in clear breach of Covid-19 regulations.

Police say a number of vehicles were still entering the site and police resources were deployed to block the entrance and prevent anyone else attending.

Two industrial-sized generators were also located by officers.

A 49-year-old man was identified as one of the landowners.

He was reported for summons for holding a gathering of more than 30 people in breach of coronavirus legislation.

Police continued to monitor the site overnight and returned on Sunday morning to seize the generators.

Chief Superintendent Damien Miller, Leeds District Commander, said: “This large-scale event was an absolutely blatant breach of the coronavirus restrictions that are in place to keep our communities safe from this ongoing threat to public health.

“It is even more appalling that it came only the day after widespread media coverage highlighting the increased restrictions in Leeds that have been put in place to address recent rises in the district’s coronavirus rates.

“Everyone should know by now what is expected of them, and no-one can be in any doubt that large gatherings such as this are completely unacceptable.

“We are maintaining our approach of engaging, explaining and encouraging compliance in the first instance, but, as this latest incident demonstrates, we will not hesitate to make full use of the legislation to take firm action against those who put everyone at risk by flouting the regulations.”

Just days earlier, Greater Manchester Police issued a £10,000 fine after a wedding party in the city, the Metro reported.

Police were called to a large gathering at a site in the Longsight area of Manchester on Thursday, September 24.

Nearly 70 people were at the scene, and the organiser was handed a £10,000 fine - the first the city has so far dished out.

In Nottingham earlier this month, a teenager was also fined £10,000 for holding a party for 50 people in the city, Nottinghamshire Live said.
