Man finds 'world's longest chip' in Wetherspoons - but not everyone is convinced

A Wetherspoons regular reckons he was served "the world's longest chip" measuring at an enormous 18.5 inches - but he's not convincing everyone.

Sam Mumford posted a photo of the giant chip on Facebook, claiming it arrived with his chicken burger at The Black Boy pub in Newtown, Powys, Wales, on Friday.

The post shows Sam's mate holding up the huge chip to the camera, holding a pint of Brewdog ale in his other hand for scale.

The photo, which Sam shared in a Facebook group specifically for Wetherspoons fans, picked up a lot of attention as viewers praised his "utterly massive length."

However, some people weren't entirely convinced by Sam's discovery and questioned his claims.

As angry Facebook members called him a "fraud" and called for an adjudicator to investigate claims he'd actually joined two chips together.

To convince the naysayers, Sam posted more photos of the giant chip to verify his claim - with one photo showing the chip nearly matching the diameter of the 'Spoons dinner plate.

Wetherspoon's congratulated their customer on his find, but added they were unable to verify if the chip was indeed the longest in the world.

Sam's first post said: "Forty two chips served tonight with a chicken burger, along with the world's longest chip, the size of a pint of Brewdog."

He then added: "For the haters in the comments section, here’s verification of my magnificent chip. 18.5in of pure goodness."

One user said: "Can I commend you on your utterly massive length Sam. Have you considered a career in p*rn?"

But one, less trusting, Facebook member said: "That’s clearly two chips held together, Sam. Do you think we were born yesterday?"

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: "Hats off to Sam for finding what he believes is the longest chip in the world.

"While we can't verify that, we can certainly say that it is a whopper of a chip.

"Our chips come in all shapes and sizes and this find highlights that.

"It's great that Sam took a photo for posterity – hopefully he enjoyed eating it too."

Sam has been contacted for comment.
