Man fights for life after being found next to wheelchair

A man is fighting for his life after being found in the middle of the road with critical injuries.

Merseyside police have launched an investigation after the man was found injured in the early hours of Monday, January 24.

Emergency services were called at around 3.20am to reports that a man had been found lying in the middle of the road on the junction of Avon Close and Whitefield Avenue, Kirkdale.

The man was rushed to hospital with injuries to his stomach and neck.

Police have described his condition as critical.

Detectives say it is not yet clear how the man came to be injured and a wheelchair was also found close by.

Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and notify his next of kin.

Police have set up a cordon on the residential streets at the heart of the incident while forensic work takes place.

Officers are carrying out house-to-house, CCTV and forensic enquiries in the local area.

A police spokesperson said: "We were contacted by a member of the public at 3.20am who reported that a male had been found with injuries to his stomach and neck lying in the middle of the road in Avon Close/Whitefield Close. A wheelchair was also found close by."

Detective Inspector Jennie Beck said: "Enquiries are at the very early stages as we seek to establish what has happened to the man.

"We will be speaking to people living in the local area and carrying out CCTV enquiries.

"I would ask anyone who was in the area of Avon Close/Whitfield Close in Kirkdale in the early hours of this morning who saw or heard anything suspicious to contact us as a matter of urgency."
