Man fighting for life with critical burns after incident at Birmingham New Street station

A man is fighting for life in hospital after coming into contact with overhead cables at Birmingham New Street station.

Emergency services scrambled to the station at around 8am to reports of a man injured, with one onlooker saying he was "on fire".

A spokesman for British Transport Police said he is being treated for life-threatening burn injuries in hospital.

An air ambulance landed on top of the station car park.

A British Transport Police spokesman told the BBC: "Paramedics and police quickly arrived on scene, and a man was treated for burn injuries.

"At this early stage it is believed he came into contact with the overhead power lines.

"He has been taken to hospital where his condition is described as life-threatening.

"The circumstances of the man receiving his injuries are at this time, not believed to be suspicious."
